In the US 10% of adolescences attempt suicide, and school has something to do with it. Waking up at 6 am everyday after studying until 2 am the night before, to go to school for 7 hours is unhealthy. Studies show that "students who [obtain] less sleep over time [report] heightened levels of depressive symptoms and decreased self-esteem." And if that wasn't enough after school, students have hours of homework to complete for the next day, along with trying to balance extra curricular activities because "without them there's no way you're getting into college!". This daily routine is certainly a recipe for depression among developing teens.
Education should be fun, and a positive thing, but whenever I hear my friends talk about school, it's always followed by something negative. I don't mind learning new things, and I often can enjoy it but the way kids have to sit in desks all day scribbling notes down before the teacher changes the slide is not fun. There are Twitter accounts solely dedicated to complaining about school. When did education become such a negative topic?
