Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson is one of my all time favorite songs. I've probably listened to it a million times, and I'm actually listening to it as I write this. As a bonus, it has all the elements of a rhetorical situation!! How nice for this blog post assignment.
The song has the text; the lyrics, an author; Jack Johnson, an audience; Jack Johnson's "baby", a purpose; trying convince his girlfriend to stay in bed with him, and a setting; their house. From the first line of the song he's trying to convince his girl to stay in with him. He claims "there ain't no need to go outside" because of the bad weather (Johnson, 2). Supposedly Jack Johnson and this woman are in a romantic relationship and he hopes that "[the song will keep her] from what [she's] supposed to [do]. (Johnson, 6-7)" It's kind of sweet actually. He just wants to spend time with his girlfriend and "make [banana] pancakes. (Johnson, 10)"
Johnson uses emotion to try and persuade his "lady". This is also known as Aristotle's Pathos method of Rhetorical Situations. It's interesting that even in current pop culture we see parts of history from long long LONG ago, like Aristotle. I guess some things never change.
