My first interaction with driving a car was when I was five years old. My Dad and I would go to the dump yard every other Sunday and at the end, he would let me sit on his lap and hold the steering wheel. Obviously, I did nothing that actually affected where or how fast we went, but I sure thought that I did! I believed I was the one making the car go fast and turn and brake. Ever since those Sunday's I'd always loved driving, and couldn't wait to try it for real.
When Freshman year rolled around all I heard about was driving. A few of the older kids in my grade had already gotten their licenses but most of us were still awaiting the big 16. When my friend asked me to do Segment One with her I excitedly agreed. We signed up and talked about it 24/7. When the first day of class came, the two of us showed up to the class half an hour early and proceeded to sit outside the locked door until about two minutes before the class was meant to start, when the teacher showed up. We all introduced ourselves, I knew a few of the other students, and then we got to it. The first few days were just sitting in class, and watching videos. After the third day of class, Mrs. Poore (the driving instructor) asked people to sign up for driving practice with her. Lilly (my friend) and I signed up for the nearest session possible. I couldn't wait! All week I was waiting for it, imagining how good I was going to do. That weekend we went for our first drive with Mrs. Poore. It was a disaster. Lilly went 20 miles under the speed limit the entire time, and I didn't know you could use the brakes to slow down. But we lived, so... that's a plus.
After five more days of movies and note taking, along with lots and lots of driving sessions with Mrs. Poore, I got the hang of it. I practice as often as possible, and have really improved (honestly, I couldn't have gotten much worse, but at least now I know the brakes are not only for complete stops). Driving is one of those things that you really have to practice to get better. I'm still not 16 so I can't get my license yet, but as soon as I am, I'm getting my license! When was the first time you drove?
